ABOUT BERGEN

Bergen is the second largest city in Norway, with approximately 250.000 citizens, and enjoys a rich and concentrated cultural life.
The city is especially known for its vibrant contemporary scene, for which the experimental theatre BIT Teatergarasjen, the art academy Kunsthøgskolen i Bergen, the Grieg Academy of Music, the national contemporary dance company Carte Blanche, the academy of writing Skrivekunstakademiet, the regional art centre HKS and Bergen Electronic Arts Centre BEK are of great importance.

The large amount of artists and students of the arts leads to a lot of smallscale, crossover activity, and together with the abounding musical scene, "Art Bergen" forms its own subculture of defining importance for the city.

The traditional art forms and larger institutions are also heavily represented, with museums, theatres and the symphony orchestra.
In education, Bergen hosts important schools within classical music, jazz, arts and crafts, the humanities and - as mentioned - contemporary art and literature.
